The Challenge
Thriplow Farms needed to discharge BNG conditions for two new agricultural buildings. As a working farm, timing was critical to ensure construction could proceed without disrupting wider operations. The client required a solution that was proportionate to a smaller unit requirement but provided total legal and financial certainty.
The Solution: Boxworth Habitat Bank
The BNG units for this project were provided by our Boxworth Habitat Bank. Secured via a Section 106 agreement with South Cambridgeshire Council and registered in Summer 2025, this 20-hectare site has been transformed from arable land into a diverse mosaic of woodland, grassland, orchard, scrub, and hedgerows.
What makes Boxworth special is its strategic location. Situated just 1km north of Overhall Grove Nature Reserve and SSSI, an ancient woodland famous for its rare elms, Boxworth acts as a vital buffer and expansion zone for local wildlife.
Ecological Impact and Innovation
We didn’t just plant a standard mix; we tailored the habitat to support the neighbouring SSSI. This included planting Small-leaved elm (Ulmus minor) to support high-priority species:
