The Challenge

Thriplow Farms needed to discharge BNG conditions for two new agricultural buildings. As a working farm, timing was critical to ensure construction could proceed without disrupting wider operations. The client required a solution that was proportionate to a smaller unit requirement but provided total legal and financial certainty.

The Solution: Boxworth Habitat Bank

The BNG units for this project were provided by our Boxworth Habitat Bank. Secured via a Section 106 agreement with South Cambridgeshire Council and registered in Summer 2025, this 20-hectare site has been transformed from arable land into a diverse mosaic of woodland, grassland, orchard, scrub, and hedgerows.

What makes Boxworth special is its strategic location. Situated just 1km north of Overhall Grove Nature Reserve and SSSI, an ancient woodland famous for its rare elms, Boxworth acts as a vital buffer and expansion zone for local wildlife.

Ecological Impact and Innovation

We didn’t just plant a standard mix; we tailored the habitat to support the neighbouring SSSI. This included planting Small-leaved elm (Ulmus minor) to support high-priority species:

  • Host for Endangered Species: The White-letter Hairstreak butterfly relies almost entirely on elm foliage.
  • Biodiversity Hub: Mature elms support over 80 insect species, 180 types of lichen, and provide spring fruit for local birds.
  • Connected Nature: By bridging the gap between natural areas and ancient woodlands, we create a "multiplier effect" for nature recovery.

Direct Benefits for the Client

  • Rapid Execution: From the initial agreement to the delivery of all legal documentation, the process was completed within one week.
  • Bespoke Agreements: We adapted our contractual framework to suit the client’s needs, providing the evidence required to discharge planning conditions quickly.
  • Expert Long-Term Management: Habitat works were completed in Autumn 2025 and signed off by the council, triggering the 30-year monitoring period.
  • Trusted Stewardship: The site is managed by our land management team and reliable network of local farmers. Overseen by our Directors and monitored by our long-term ecological partners, we ensure the 30-year commitment is not just met, but exceeded.

The Result

"From the moment we agreed to proceed, everything moved quickly and smoothly. BNG Partnership were clear, efficient and easy to work with at every stage."
